Large-scale packagers are also re-tooling. A major Indian packaging firm, once focused on single-use plastics, now develops mono-material recyclable laminates and multi-layer barrier films. Those products aim to give brands the same protection that multi-material plastics once offered, while easing end-of-life recycling.

The logistics driver

India’s geography makes the packaging upgrade almost mandatory. From coastal ports to high-altitude hill stations, the distribution network subjects food items to wide temperature swings and humidity spikes. The same packaging firms developing these films are also experimenting with mono-material laminates—structures that use a single polymer throughout, making recycling easier—but those solutions may not yet match the oxygen-blocking performance of mixed-material stacks.

Industry observers warn that the packaging shift could simply move the environmental burden from chemical additives to plastic waste unless the entire value chain—from material sourcing to end-of-life processing—adapts in step.
