Aschenbrenner, a former member of OpenAI’s “Superalignment” team, drew attention with an essay titled “Situational Awareness.” He argued that the next wave of AI progress would be throttled not by algorithms but by the hardware needed to train ever-larger models: chips, high-bandwidth memory, sprawling data centers, and massive power grids. Acting on that view, he launched a hedge fund of the same name and began buying companies that supply the backbone for large-language models and frontier compute.

The fund’s early performance seemed to vindicate the bet. A 439 percent gain in the first half of the year grabbed headlines and attracted capital-hungry investors eager to ride the AI tide. At its peak the fund managed roughly $45 billion in assets with a staff of just eight people, a scale that showed how quickly the market was willing to fund high-conviction, infrastructure-focused ideas.

How leverage turned a winning streak into a fire sale

The same leverage that amplified the fund’s gains also made it vulnerable. In late July Aschenbrenner asked existing investors for fresh capital, signalling that the fund needed cash to sustain its positions. Days later a sharp pullback in key AI-adjacent stocks—most notably a slump in SK Hynix—triggered margin calls from the banks that had lent the fund money. A parallel short bet against software firms such as Adobe also moved against the fund, adding further stress.

Facing simultaneous calls for cash, the fund rushed to sell nearly every publicly traded holding to Citadel. The public side emptied out. Aschenbrenner is said to be keeping his private holdings, including a sizable stake in Anthropic, but the disappearance of the public portfolio starkly illustrates how borrowed money can turn a headline-making return into a liquidity crisis.

Why the collapse matters beyond one fund

The episode highlights the volatility that now defines the “AI CapEx” era. Companies are pouring hundreds of billions into hardware, and the market reacts sharply to any hint that those investments might miss their schedules. For developers and founders, the lesson is that while AI roadmaps accelerate, the financial scaffolding that supports the buildout still obeys traditional market dynamics—margin calls, funding costs, and sudden shifts in investor sentiment.

From an investment standpoint, the fund’s downfall underscores a tension between conviction and capital structure.
