People use AI assistants to find local services at a massive rate. Use of AI for local searches jumped from 6 percent to 45 percent in just one year.

But here is the problem. ChatGPT recommends only 1.2 percent of local businesses.

The old way to win was to rank on a page of search results. The new way is to be the one name an AI says out loud. Most local owners have not noticed the rules changed.

The shift is brutal. When an AI summary appears, clicks to organic results drop by 58 percent. In some cases, 93 percent of sessions end without a single click. The list of ten options you used to scroll through is gone.

You are no longer competing for position seven. You are competing to be one of the three names an AI mentions at all.

If you want to stay visible, you must change your strategy.

  • Fix your data hygiene. AI does not just use Google. It pulls heavily from Foursquare, Apple Maps, and Yelp. Your name, address, and phone number must be identical across every platform.
  • Make your website machine-readable. AI crawlers struggle with heavy JavaScript. Use server-rendered text and structured data so an assistant can actually read your hours, prices, and services.
  • Write for answers. Use clear blocks of text that answer specific questions. AI lifts passages, not entire pages.

The assistant owns the discovery, but you still own the close. About 51 percent of people still click through to a real website before they decide.

Your goal is to be the answer when they ask, and have a website good enough to win them once they arrive.

The loss of customers to AI is silent. You cannot see it on a dashboard because you cannot measure searches where you were never mentioned. Do not wait for your competitors to catch up.
