𝗡𝗼𝗿𝘄𝗮𝘆 𝗕𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝗔𝗜 𝗶𝗻 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹𝘀: 𝗔 𝗚𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁?
Norway just took a massive step.
The country has issued a temporary ban on generative AI tools like ChatGPT in primary and lower secondary schools.
This decision did not come from educators. It came from the national data protection agency, Datatilsynet.
The reasons are twofold:
Legal Data Privacy The agency found that schools failed to prove they could protect student data. Many students are as young as six. Using these platforms puts their personal information at risk in ways schools cannot yet manage.
Cognitive Development There is a deep concern about how AI affects the learning process. When a student uses AI to write a report, they bypass the hard work of research and thinking. They become consumers of answers rather than builders of knowledge.
The Norwegian approach focuses on sequencing. They believe children must build "analogue" skills first. These include:
- Critical thinking
- Emotional intelligence
- Independent problem-solving
- Deep reading skills
The goal is not to reject technology forever. The goal is to ensure children develop their own mental processing power before they rely on an artificial one.
While some countries integrate AI into every lesson, Norway is choosing deliberate absence. They are prioritizing the legal rights and developmental needs of children over the fast adoption of new tools.
This move raises a vital question for the rest of the world:
In our rush to prepare children for an AI future, are we forgetting to protect them in the present?
