The debate around Generative AI is stuck.

People fall into two camps. Some focus only on the hype. Others focus only on the hate.

The hype crowd ignores the harms. The hate crowd ignores the utility.

We can learn from history to find a middle path. Look at the motor car.

Cars brought speed and convenience. They also brought pollution, accidents, and congestion. We did not ban cars. Instead, we built a system of rules. We assigned responsibility to manufacturers, drivers, and society.

We can apply this same model to Generative AI.

To find a path forward, we must assign responsibility to three groups:

  1. Model Providers (The Manufacturers)
  • They own the source. They must ensure data is used with permission.
  • They own the preparation. They must reduce bias and manage the environmental impact of data centers.
  1. Model Users (The Motorists)
  • They own the application. They must use AI ethically.
  • They must not use AI to mislead others or steal time from human creators.
  1. Consumers and Society (The Public)
  • We own the outcome.
  • We identify new harms and pressure leaders to fix them.
  • We decide how AI integrates into our daily lives.

If providers fix the source and users drive responsibly, we can focus on the actual value of the technology.

I want to experiment with AI. I want to see its true utility. But I only want to do so if we actively work to remove the harms.

This model is not perfect. All models are wrong, but some are useful.

I want your feedback. If you support AI, tell me how to fix the harms. If you hate AI, tell me if you see any potential utility.

Let us stop the binary debate and start building a framework for coexistence.
