Noida International Airport Set to Launch First Cargo Flight Today
Noida International Airport (NIA) in Jewar is expanding its operational horizons beyond passenger travel with its first scheduled cargo flight arriving this Wednesday. This milestone follows the successful commencement of commercial passenger services, positioning the greenfield project as a critical logistics backbone for Northern India.
Scaling Up: From 200,000 to 1.5 Million Metric Tonnes
The cargo infrastructure at NIA is designed for massive scalability to meet the growing demands of global and domestic trade. Developed by Air India SATS (AISATS), the facility will initially possess an annual handling capacity of 200,000 metric tonnes. However, the long-term roadmap is ambitious, with plans to expand this capacity to a staggering 1.5 million metric tonnes.
By catering to domestic, international, and express cargo, the airport aims to alleviate the logistical pressure on the National Capital Region while serving as a high-speed gateway for goods moving through the Yamuna Expressway.
High-Tech Warehousing and Digital Logistics
To ensure seamless movement of goods, NIA is integrating advanced digital systems and cutting-edge hardware. The airport's cargo hub will utilize the IATA-recommended E-Freight platform, facilitating paperless documentation and end-to-end live tracking for freight forwarders and e-commerce giants.
The technical specifications of the cargo facility include:
- Warehousing: 22,000 square metres of dedicated warehouse space.
- Operations: Two dedicated freighter bays capable of supporting round-the-clock (24/7) operations.
- Hardware: 19 truck docks, nine X-ray machines for security, and 12 Unit Load Device (ULD) roller decks to maximize throughput.
- Software Ecosystem: Utilization of COSYS+, e-Acceptance, and cargo community platforms to drive real-time operational efficiency.
A Strategic Hub for Northern India
The transition from passenger flights to cargo operations marks a significant phase in NIA's evolution. Earlier this week, the airport celebrated its commercial passenger debut with an IndiGo flight from Lucknow, which carried a symbolic group of 170 local farmers who surrendered their land for the project.
