SpaceX Valuation Nears $3 Trillion, Surpassing Amazon and Microsoft

Elon Musk’s SpaceX has staged a monumental market debut, with its valuation soaring past tech giants Amazon and Microsoft in just days. Following a massive surge in share prices, the rockets-to-AI powerhouse is now positioned as one of the top five most valuable companies globally.

A Historic Post-IPO Surge

SpaceX's stock (SPCX) witnessed a dramatic 14.3% climb on Tuesday, reaching $220 per share. This represents a staggering 62% increase from its initial IPO price of $135. If these gains hold, the company’s market capitalization is projected to reach approximately $2.85 trillion. This rally was significant enough to provide the biggest boost to the Nasdaq Composite index, with trading volumes exceeding $23.1 billion—surpassing the combined trading volumes of Nvidia, Microsoft, Tesla, and Apple.

The momentum was further bolstered by underwriters exercising the "greenshoe" option, which increased the total IPO proceeds from $75 billion to $85.7 billion. Additionally, SpaceX announced the strategic acquisition of software firm Anysphere for $60 billion, signaling its aggressive expansion into the AI and software sectors.

Market Dominance vs. Financial Fundamentals

While SpaceX's market cap is rivaling Microsoft’s $2.92 trillion and Amazon’s $2.64 trillion, its financial profile remains distinct from traditional Big Tech. Last year, SpaceX reported sales of $18.67 billion but recorded a net loss of $4.94 billion, largely due to its merger with the money-losing xAI.

This gap between valuation and profitability has drawn scrutiny from analysts. Ipek Ozkardeskaya, a senior market analyst at Swissquote Bank, noted that the current valuation appears speculative, driven by investors buying in anticipation of further price increases rather than fundamental earnings.

Upcoming Catalysts: Index Inclusion and Options Trading

Despite the warnings of volatility, several institutional catalysts are expected to drive further demand. SpaceX is slated for fast-track inclusion in the Nasdaq 100, which will mandate buying from passive funds and ETFs. Furthermore, FTSE Russell and MSCI are scheduled to add the stock to their respective indexes on June 26 and June 29.
