Scrabble’s economy is a relic. The numbers printed in the lower-right corner of every tile come from a manual tally of newspaper pages conducted in the 1930s. That sample of front-page English—typed, edited, and heavily formal—set the price for every letter in the box. Ninety years later, those values are still the law of the board.
Language, though, does not stand still. Word lists expand, usage shifts, and the vocabulary of a modern lexicon looks different from Depression-era headlines. A recent study put the vintage tariff to the test by analyzing the ENABLE word list, a public-domain dictionary of 172,835 playable words. The results make it clear that the old newspaper census no longer matches the market. In fact, the pricing is inverted in eleven distinct ways.
When Common Letters Cost Too Much
The logic behind a tile’s value is simple: the more often a letter appears in the language, the less it should cost. A player should have to work harder to earn points from a rare letter. These are not edge cases. They represent systematic mispricings. C is the tenth most common letter in the ENABLE list, yet Scrabble treats it like a mid-tier luxury consonant. U, which is genuinely harder to find in the corpus, is priced at a single point. The result is a letter that clogs your rack far more often than its three-point price tag would suggest.
The Worst Offenders
C is the single clearest anomaly. At three points, it is trapped between premium consonants and cheap workhorses. In practice, it is about as useful as D or G, which both cost less. H and P suffer from the same problem. They are common enough to show up in ordinary words—think of the sheer number of words beginning with these letters—yet they carry a three or four point penalty that better suits rarer tiles.
On the flip side, G and U are comparative steals. G snaps neatly into -ING and -AG extensions, and it costs only two points. U, despite being less frequent on the whole than several higher-priced letters, remains one of the cheapest vowels in the game. If the ENABLE frequencies were used as a pricing guide, C, H, M, and P would all drop in value.
The high-value rack also looks suspect. K at five points is more common than W at four. Among the ten-point tiles, Q and Z both appear more often than J or X, which cost eight. That does not mean Q and Z are common; it means J and X are rarer than their price implies. A player drawing an X or a J is holding something genuinely scarce, yet the points awarded do not fully reflect that gap.
Oddities Buried in the List
The analysis surfaced more than just pricing errors. The ENABLE list holds two fifteen-letter isograms—words in which no letter repeats. Dermatoglyphics and uncopyrightable both stretch to fifteen unique characters without a single duplicate. Finding even a short isogram is a linguistic stunt; sustaining one to fifteen letters is a reminder of how flexible English spelling can be when it stretches to its limits.
Then there is the remarkable anagram set A, E, P, R, S. Those five letters can be rearranged into twelve distinct valid words, making it the richest five-letter pool in the list. No other combination of that size produces so many separate entries.
The distribution of starting letters is equally lopsided. A total of 18,988 words in the list begin with S. X opens only 136. That gap—roughly a hundred and forty to one—illustrates how heavily English vocabulary leans on certain sounds and shapes. S is the engine room of the dictionary. X is a specialist, useful mostly for crossing words or bailing out a tight board.
What Would Change?
