The product is not the business. The code is just a delivery tool. The business solves three problems.

  1. Who has a painful, recurring problem? A tool for a hospital is not valuable because it works well. It is valuable because it stops wasted staff time and angry customers. You sell the removal of pain. You do not sell software.

The numbers that matter

Two figures decide if you survive.

  • Customer Acquisition Cost (CAC): The cost to win one paying customer through marketing and sales.
  • Lifetime Value (LTV): The total money a customer brings in.

Investors want an LTV at least 3 times higher than your CAC. If you do not hit this, you lose money. Growth without retention is a trap. You burn cash you cannot earn back.

Churn kills businesses

Losing 5% of customers every month sounds small. Over a year, you lose half your base. You spent money to get them. Now they are gone.

Keeping a customer is cheaper than finding a new one. This is why companies focus on support and onboarding.

Build a moat

Anyone can copy a feature. It is harder to copy switching costs. This means making it hard for a customer to leave due to data or workflows. Without a moat, you are just renting market share.

The long game

Winners do not always move first. They stay standing as the market grows. They turn trust into retention. They turn retention into a pricing model.

Your choice of model shapes your cash flow and your growth. Pick it early.
