Enterprise AI Agents Need a Control Plane

AI agents are easy to build but hard to manage.

In the beginning, everyone focused on speed. You could build a research agent or a data agent in minutes. Now, the focus is shifting. The market no longer cares about how fast an agent responds in a chat. It cares about how you manage that agent once it enters your business.

We are moving from the builder layer to the control plane layer.

Companies like Microsoft, Google, ServiceNow, and LangChain are all building management tools. They are not just helping you create agents. They are helping you govern them.

If you do not have a control plane, you face agent sprawl. This means you have redundant, ungoverned, and conflicting agents across your company.

You must answer these questions:

  • Who owns the agent?
  • Whose credentials does it use to access your systems?
  • What specific systems can it touch?
  • What happens when the owner leaves the company?
  • What happens when the cost spikes or the tool breaks?

Agents are more like semi-autonomous workers than simple software. They have memory. They use APIs. They interact with humans. This makes them risky if you do not have a central place to name, monitor, and retire them.

A real control plane handles the boring but vital tasks:

  • Registry: A list of every agent in use.
  • Identity: Knowing exactly who or what an agent is.
  • Permissions: Controlling what data an agent can see.
  • Audit: Keeping a record of every action an agent takes.
  • Lifecycle: Knowing when to suspend or retire an agent.

Do not ask vendors how fast their tool creates an agent. That is basic.

Instead, ask what happens in month five. Ask if they can show you the owner of every agent. Ask if they can stop an agent instantly if it behaves badly. Ask if they can connect agent costs to specific business workflows.

Building agents is the easy part. Running them as a professional workforce is the hard part.
