Title: Google AI Visibility Metrics Are Here

Google has added AI Performance Insights to Merchant Center, a dashboard that tells merchants how often their products appear in Google’s generative-AI shopping answers. The feature is live only in the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and India, and it tracks English-language queries.

Why the tool matters now

Shoppers are no longer scrolling through endless listings; they ask a conversational agent and get a curated “AI Overview” or a chat-style recommendation. Until today, sellers couldn’t see whether their catalog showed up in those answers. AI Performance Insights finally delivers analytics for that hidden channel.

How the metric works

Inside Merchant Center, a merchant picks rival brands to benchmark. Google then counts AI impressions for each brand and reports a share-of-voice percentage. The data splits into three buyer stages:

  • Discovery – shoppers browsing broad categories.
  • Evaluation – users comparing specs and details.
  • Ready to buy – shoppers who have decided and are looking for a purchase option.

The tool only counts organic AI traffic; paid ads are excluded. In other words, the dashboard shows whether Google’s AI can find a product from the feed information, not how much a merchant spends on advertising.

Immediate limits

  • Availability: five countries only; Thailand and other markets are still missing.
  • Language: English queries only.
  • Scope: no paid-search data, no cross-language insights.

What merchants can do today

Even if you’re outside the supported regions, the same data-quality principles apply.

  • Add conversational attributes – extra fields that describe product use cases, style or intent give the AI more context.
  • Include video links – a short product video can surface in AI Overviews, boosting visibility.
  • Keep feeds clean and structured – correct titles, accurate categories and complete specifications reduce the chance the AI skips your items.

Google cites internal data that a cleaner, richer product feed can lift conversion rates by about 5 %. The metric is modest but meaningful for high-volume retailers.

Bottom line

AI Performance Insights turns an opaque part of the shopper journey into measurable data. Merchants who tidy up their product feeds now will be ready to claim a larger voice when Google widens the tool’s reach; those who ignore it risk losing visibility to competitors already tuned to the AI-first shopping experience.
