List five to ten major beats. For a novel, that might be the inciting incident, the first serious complication, the midpoint shift, the disaster that drops everything to its lowest point, and the climax. For a nonfiction book, it might be the problem the reader faces, the failed solutions they have already tried, the core concept that changes their perspective, the practical application, and the new normal they can expect. These checkpoints keep you from drifting into the weeds. Yet between each stone, you leave room to surprise yourself.

Stop Researching, Start Writing

Research is a notorious trap. You tell yourself you cannot write the first chapter until you understand Victorian plumbing, submarine navigation, or the exact tax code of 1987. Six months later you are an amateur expert with zero chapters written.

Research does help you write with confidence. A reader can tell when a writer is bluffing. But you do not need to become an expert before Chapter One. Learn enough to avoid obvious mistakes. Learn enough to know what you will need to look up later. Then start writing.

Here is a practical way to handle it. When you hit a detail you do not know, insert a bracketed note like [check train schedule] or [verify medical procedure] and keep moving. Your first draft is not a doctoral thesis. It is a story. You can verify the speed of a 1972 Mustang during revision. Set a hard limit on your pre-writing research, whether that is one weekend or thirty minutes a day for two weeks. Stopping to research every sentence is just another form of procrastination.

Discipline Beats Genius

Here is the truth that keeps me returning to the outline whenever I get impatient. The writers who finish books are
