The Great Marine Collapse: From Epidemic to Ecosystem Failure
In 2013 a massive marine heatwave slammed the northeast Pacific. At the same time Vibrio pectenicida sparked “sea star wasting disease,” carving lesions into the bodies of Pycnopodia helianthoides (sunflower sea stars) and killing roughly 57.5 billion individuals across 20 species.
Sunflower sea stars sat at the top of the near-shore food chain. When they vanished, purple sea urchins ran rampant, stripping kelp forests bare. By 2017, El Niño-driven warming had erased more than 90 % of kelp in several West Coast regions.
The Discovery of the Hidden ‘Seasquatch’ Lair
Researchers from Sonoma State University, the University of British Columbia and the Hakai Institute finally changed the story. In June 2025 research technician Rachael Karm spotted an odd cluster of sea-star arms while surveying a protected stretch of coastline. Subsequent dives confirmed a colony of 18 sunflower sea stars—the largest and southernmost group recorded since the 2013 crash.
The colony includes adults and juveniles, a sign that it may be reproducing. The find prompted a rapid response: a “dream team” of 25 scientific divers from UC Berkeley, The Nature Conservancy and other institutions rushed to the site to assess and plan next steps.
Why Kelp Forests Matter for the Global Climate
Kelp forests do more than look pretty. They:

- Invest in blue-carbon – Integrating kelp and other macroalgae into climate plans can cut emissions while creating new livelihoods.
