The hills around Kalladi came down without warning on Tuesday. A massive wall of mud, rock, and debris tore through the area near Meppady in Wayanad, burying everything in its path. Human changes amplify the risk. Roads are cut into hillsides without adequate drainage. Slope bases are leveled to make room for homes and farms. Vegetation that once held soil in place gets cleared. The Search in the Debris

Rescue work after a landslide is brutal. Teams arriving at Kalladi faced deep, unstable material. Every step risks triggering a secondary slide. The debris is not just mud; it includes sharp rock, shattered timber, and twisted metal.

Searchers work with shovels, bare hands when necessary, and sensing equipment where available. They listen for sounds. They cut through roofs that are now underground. Time is the enemy.
