Petrol and Diesel Prices May Drop as Cheaper Crude Reaches India
Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri has signaled a potential reprieve for Indian consumers, suggesting that retail fuel prices could ease soon. The possibility of a reduction depends on the arrival of lower-priced crude oil shipments currently in transit to Indian refineries.
Why Retail Fuel Prices May Decrease
The possibility of lower petrol and diesel rates is tied directly to the procurement cycle of Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs). Minister Puri clarified that OMCs are currently processing inventories of crude oil purchased at higher international prices.
As these high-cost stocks are depleted and replaced by more recent, cheaper crude purchases, the benefits are expected to trickle down to the end consumer. However, the Minister noted that this transition will not be instantaneous, as it requires the new, lower-priced shipments to physically reach the domestic refineries and move through the supply chain.
Defending Domestic Pricing Amid Global Volatility
Addressing concerns regarding inflation and rising transport costs, Puri defended the government's handling of fuel pricing. He emphasized that despite significant geopolitical tensions in West Asia and disruptions near the Strait of Hormuz, India has managed to limit the impact on domestic consumers.
Key points raised by the Minister include:
- Strategic Tax Reductions: The government has absorbed a burden of approximately ₹10 per litre on both petrol and diesel through multiple cuts in central excise duties in November 2021, May 2022, and more recently.
- Comparative Stability: Puri claimed that the overall rise in fuel prices has been limited to about ₹7.60 per litre. He further stated that, compared to the price levels during the 2022 Russia-Ukraine conflict, domestic prices have effectively remained stable.
- Global Context: The Minister remarked that among 193 UN member nations, only Japan has seen a lower increase in petroleum prices than India.
Financial Pressure on Oil Marketing Companies
While the government has worked to shield consumers, the financial strain on OMCs is significant. The Minister revealed that oil marketing companies are currently facing losses of approximately ₹1,000 crore per day.
